Tanzania: Permanent Secretary asks for research to address sugar deficit in country

Tanzania: Gerald Kusaya, permanent secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Agriculture asked to do research to increase sugar production and address sugar scarcity in the country. He urged it during his visit to the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute, Kibaha centre (TARI Kibaha) in the Coast Region recently.

He said, “We are spending more money on importing sugar as we cannot produce sufficient sugar at a domestic level. The research in the sugarcane industry will help in boosting the sugar production and we will be able to reduce our sugar imports.”

“We should research and come out with improved seed varieties that will increase sugarcane production in the country,” he further added.

The domestic demand for sugar in the country is around 710,000 tonnes while the local producers produce 320,000 tonnes of sugar.
