Tanzania witnesses hike in sugar production

Tanzania has witnessed a hike in sugar production in 2018-2019 season. It has increased by 16.8 per cent as the manufacturers trying to fill the gap. Addressing the national assembly, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Omary Mgumba, said that sugar production in Tanzania has increased from 30,7431.26 tonnes in 2017-2018 to 359219.25 tonnes in 2018-2019 season.

Country sees the rise in production at the time when Tanzania has allowed the manufacturers to import the sugar to fulfil the deficit. Earlier, traders were into the importation.

Sugarcane production in the country is also increased. Mgumba informed the Parliament that cane output has also increased from 5,68,083 tonnes in 2017-2018 to 7,08,460 tonnes in 2018-2019 season.

Tanzania has plans of more than double sugar output in three years as the government avails more land for growing sugarcane and new mills start production.
