Thailand spreads awareness against sugarcane field burning

Bangkok: Thailand continues to spread awareness among farmers about the ill effects of sugarcane field burning. The campaign has been launched by the government in which the Air Pollution Resolution Center, sugarcane millers and cane producers are jointly spreading awareness against the burning of cane fields to reduce smog.

The sugarcane growers were forced to burn their fields before harvesting as the service fees of sugarcane harvesters and square balers are high, said Attapol Charoenchansa, director-general of the Pollution Control Department and head of the Air Pollution Resolution Center.

The government has invited the operators to support the campaign against the smog from sugarcane plantations that have grown over 10 million rai in 47 provinces.

As many as 58 sugar mills joined the nationwide campaign and others would follow soon, said Mr. Attapol.
