Thanjavur: Due to non-payment of dues, sugarcane farmers shifting to other crops

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu: Sugarcane farmers from the district are still awaiting the cane dues of around Rs 27 crore from the sugar mill that is pending since 2016. They have appealed to the sugar mill to clear their dues immediately and decided to stage agitation in front of the district collectorate if demands are not met.

The farmers from Kurunkulam, Orathanadu, Vallam, Tirukkattuppalli regions had grown sugarcane over 14,000 acres of land. All of them are members of the Arignar Anna Sugar Mills in Kurunkulam in Thanjavur.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, farmers in Thanjavur district usually take up sugarcane cultivation on thousands of acres. However, due to non-payment of arrears by the mills, members of the mill have gradually migrated to paddy from sugarcane crop.
