Madurai, Tamil Nadu: The National Cooperative Sugar Mills at Alanganallur has urged the sugarcane farmers to increase the area under cane cultivation so that the mill can be revived, reports The Times of India.
The mill shut its operations two years ago due to a lack of availability of cane and expects to start operations if crop is grown on atleast 5,000 acres in the region.
N Palanisamy, president of the Tamil Nadu sugarcane farmers association said, “The mill was closed not due to drought but due to mismanagement of the mill authorities. Farmers have faced severe hardship as the cane registered with the mill was sent to neighbouring sugar mills for crushing.”
Farmers have several times launched a protest to revive the sugar mill and had launched a 46-day sit-in agitation inside the mill premises demanding its revival in February 2022.
“We are ready to support the mill and already 1,752 acres of sugarcane have been registered with it. We are ready to do anything to make the mill operational again,” he said.
