Three new sugarcane varieties recommend for drought-prone region

Pune: Sugarcane farmers are aiming to boost cane production to improve its financial condition. The water situation in drought-prone region like Marathwada is becoming grimmer, therefore ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore is testing three new sugarcane varieties in such areas, which will be compatible as per the region. The three new sugarcane varieties are Co 85019, 98017, and 09004.

Dr. Bakshi Ram, Director, ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute speaking on this said, “The tests of these varieties have shown positive results. These tests are underway in Kopargaon, Nanded, Jalna and other areas.

“Soon we will recommend Co 11015 as an effective option for popular sugarcane variety Co 86032. Compare to Tamil Nadu, Kolhapur’s region climate is favourable for this variety. It will aid in increasing sugar recovery by 1 per cent.” he further added.
