Trading Corporation of Bangladesh to buy 8,000 tonnes of sugar from S Alam mill

Bangladesh’s Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is set to buy 8,000 tonnes of sugar from privately-owned S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Limited at 137 taka per kilogram, according to a proposal submitted to the government’s procurement committee last week, reported Newagebd.

Notably, the purchase will proceed without undergoing a tender process.

Today, a meeting of the purchase committee, likely to be chaired by the finance minister, will convene at the secretariat to scrutinize the proposal.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has outlined plans to procure 1.4 lakh tonnes of sugar in the current fiscal year, aimed at distributing the sweetener at a subsidized rate to its one crore cardholders.

Contracts for 14,500 tonnes have already been inked by the TCB.

Efforts by the TCB to secure supply from state-owned sugar mills hit a snag as the price per kilogram of sugar surged to Tk 160 from those mills.

In a recent development, TCB’s endeavor to raise the price of sugar to Tk 100 per kilogram from Tk 70 was abruptly canceled within 24 hours.
