Uganda government rejects proposal to export sugarcane to Kenya

The closure of large sugar mill Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) and Kakira Sugar for their routine annual maintenance last month impacted Uganda’s sugarcane farmers.

Cane growers in Busoga sub-region are stuck with produce due to low demand from millers. Following the excess sugarcane in the region and no taker of it, there were plans to export unprocessed raw materials to neighbouring Kenya. But, now according to the reports, Uganda’s government opposed to the proposal of export.

Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Minister Amelia Kyambadde said that the government discourages the exports to promote industrial growth through value addition.

Minister maintained that the existing sugar millers can process all the sugarcane, which is 500,000 metric tonnes excess in the last two months.
