Ugandan President lauds Tanzania for allowing smooth import of sugar

Tanzania has begun importing sugar from Uganda to meet the domestic need of the commodity in the country.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has praised Tanzania for allowing the smooth import of sugar from his country.

Museveni issued a statement in his inaugural speech stating that this will help in cementing ties between the two nations. He acknowledged the support of his Tanzanian counterpart Samia Suluhu Hassan who was presented during his swearing-in ceremony.

The sugar output in Uganda is over 600,000 tonnes per year but its domestic consumption is around 300,000 tonnes per year, he said.
“It was necessary for us to export surplus sugar and we are glad that Tanzania is importing our sugar,” he said.
