UP cane minister directs sugar millers to ensure crushing of all cane standing in fields

Muzaffarnagar: Uttar Pradesh cane minister Suresh Rana has asked sugar mills in the state to continue cane crushing operations until they complete crushing of last cane standing in the fields. This move came in action after the Government was criticized by the opposition including Congress, BKU and RLD over the farmer suicide case in Muzaffarnagar district. Minister Rana conducted a meeting with sugar millers on Wednesday through video conferencing and directed on the same.

A 52- year-old farmer Ompal hanged himself at his field after he could not get a receipt for selling his Sugarcane crop. The incident triggered with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and other parties attacking heavily on the Government through microblogging site Twitter.

Refuting her allegations, minister Rana stated that the Yogi Adityanath’s Government has ensured that for the first time a record Rs.112 crores quintal Sugarcane is crushed in the state and yet sugar mills are still operating in the state. “Our government has paid Rs 99,000 crores of cane arrears to farmers in 3 years as against Rs 95,000 crores paid by previous SP government in five years.” He said.
