UP farmers protest against irregularities in weighing of sugarcane

Lucknow: Sugarcane farmers from Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh held a protest on March 8 against the alleged irregularities in the weighing of sugarcane brought to local sugar mil. The district is the home town of Rakesh Tikait, the leader of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) who is leading the agitation against the three farm laws.

The angry farmers parked their tractors and trolleys loaded with sugarcane on highways and blocked the road.

The mills are delaying in weighing cane which is brought for crushing. The delay in weighing leads to drying up of cane, reducing its weight and increasing our losses, said a farmer from the district.

We have travelled more than 40 km to a sugar mill in Budhana Tehsil with our cane and are waiting in line for more than three days for our turn to weigh the cane and send it for crushing, said another farmer.
