Uttar Pradesh: Defaulting sugar mills directed to pay cane dues before starting next season

Meerut: Uttar Pradesh government is taking steps to ensure sugar mills clear all the cane dues.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, UP sugarcane development minister Suresh Rana said, “All the defaulting sugar mills have been asked to clear the pending cane dues before starting of next crushing season.”

The minister said, “The farmers during the Yogi Government’s rule are in a better position than what they were during the previous regimes. The cane dues backlog was huge during that period that had impacted the cane farmers financially.”

Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have cleared the cane payment worth Rs 26,061.57 crore for the 2020-21 crushing season. The amount paid is around 78.92 per cent of the total cane dues. The farmers have received the cane dues despite the low sale of sugar due to lower consumption led by the pandemic.
