Uttar Pradesh, the largest sugarcane-producing state in India, is heading towards the end of the 2022-23 sugarcane crushing season, with an estimated sugar production of 10.5 million metric tonnes. According to official figures, as of May 15, 2023, the state’s sugar mills have crushed 1,082.01 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in a sugar production of 104.01 lakh tonnes. In the previous season, the state had crushed 1016.26 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 101.98 lakh tonnes of sugar.
Efforts by the government to ensure timely payment by sugar mills to sugarcane farmers are underway. In terms of sugarcane payment, the mills have so far disbursed INR 27,718.64 crore, which accounts for 75.69% of the total payment.
