Roorkee, Uttarakhand: The area under sugarcane cultivation in the district has decreased this year compared to last year, reported Live Hindustan. Last year, sugarcane was cultivated on 66,225.265 hectares, but this year it has been reduced to 63,968.199 hectares. The agriculture department recorded a decline of 2,257.066 hectares in the sugarcane growing area compared to the previous year.
The reduction in sugarcane cultivation is attributed to the heavy rainfall last year and the increasing development of nearby colonies. Considering the continuous rise in sugarcane cultivation in recent years, the management of local sugar mills had increased the crushing capacity of the mills a year ago. However, due to crop damage last year, the mills were unable to receive an adequate supply of sugarcane.
