Veteran industrialist BK Birla passes away leaving behind a grand legacy

Mumbai: Veteran industrialist and chairman of Century Textiles and Industries, Basant Kumar Birla (BK Birla) reportedly died in Mumbai on July 3. He was 98-years-old.

He is the grandfather of Kumar Mangalam Birla, the chairman of the Aditya Birla Group. He played a key role in uplifting the various companies and known for a range of business initiatives.

He had been active in the industry since he was 15. He focused on industries of tea, chemicals, plywood, cardamom, shipping,  spun pipe, transparent paper, nylon yarns, cotton, polyester etc.

He was also the chairman of BK Birla Institute of Engineering and Technology and many other companies, educational trusts and institutes.

Birla is survived by his daughters Jayshree Mohta and Manjushree Khaitan. Kumar Mangalam Birla’s father Aditya Vikram Birla, who died in 1995, was his only son.
