VSI to help farmers of Vidarbha to cultivate sugarcane crop

Cane cultivation in Vidarbha with the guidance of Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) will help in preventing the farmers’ suicide to a large extent, said Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar, reports The Hitavada.

He was speaking with reporters at the Patrakar Club of Nagpur during his two-day Vidarbha tour.

“Vidarbha farmers have been growing cotton and soybean for many years and these are not yielding satisfactory results. Agrarian crisis can be avoided if different crops are cultivated,” he said.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had insisted on bringing the sub-centre of the institute to Vidarbha. A 100-acre land has been identified where it can be developed.

“VSI would train farmers in this region to cultivate cane and guide them to extract its byproducts. This would reduce farmers’ suicide, I feel. We can produce sugar as well as ethanol from cane. These products will speed up industrial growth and generate employment,” Pawar said.
