Water level in Southern region reservoirs falls to 20% of total storage capacity

The latest water reservoir report announced by the Central Water Commission shows that the water storage in reservoirs across the Southern States is only at 20%. Across the country, the total water available is 61.801 BCM, which is 35% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Last year, the total water available in these reservoirs for the corresponding period was 74.47 BCM. Hence, the water storage in the reservoirs shows a decline of 17% compared to the corresponding period last year.

In the Northern region, the total water available in the reservoirs is 6.338 BCM, which is 32% of the total live storage capacity of the reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 41%, indicating a shortfall.

In the Eastern region, the water available in the reservoirs is 9.242 BCM, which is 45.24% of the total live storage capacity of the reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 40%. This shows that water available in these reservoirs is higher than that of the corresponding period of last year.

In the Western region, the total water available in the reservoirs is 14.835 BCM which is 40 % of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 47%. Thus, storage during the current year is less than the storage of last year.

In the Central region, the total water available in the reservoirs is 20.815 BCM which is 43% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 47%. The reservoirs in the Central region have less water stored in them, compared to the corresponding period last year.

The bigger spot of worry is the Southern region. The total water available in the reservoirs is 10.571 BCM which is 20% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs, compared to 34% in the corresponding period last year.
