Wheat cultivation in Ludhiana district down to 5-year low

Ludhiana: The area under wheat cultivation in Ludhiana district has been reported to be the lowest since 2017, according to the state government, reports Tribune India.

In 2017-18, the area under wheat cultivation in Ludhiana was 2.52 lakh hectares which has been reduced to 2.43 lakh hectares in 2022-23, revealed the officials.

Chief Agriculture Officer (CAO) Dr Amanjit Singh said, “The farmers in the district have sown wheat in 2.43 lakh hectares of area for the 2022-23 season. The reduction in area under wheat cultivation indicates that the farmers are diversifying crops and are opting for alternate crops that would give good returns and consume less water.”

The decline in yield and production of wheat is also one of the reasons for farmers opting for other crops in the district, said officials.
