Wheat procurement in Punjab increased by 19 per cent

Chandigarh: As the wheat harvest season is nearing its end, the state has witnessed a 19% increase in wheat procurement by the government, reports Indian Express.

The arrival of wheat has been increased by 16% (16.39 lakh tonne) while the government has procured 19% more (17.4 lakh tonne) than the last year till May 2, said the officials.

The state government and centre have procured a total of 111.06 lakh tonnes of wheat till May 2. During the same period last year the government had procured 93.63 lakh tonnes of wheat and in the last Rabi total wheat procurement was 96.48 lakh tonnes.

The government has fixed MSP for wheat at Rs 2,125 per quintal. Total wheat arrival till May 2 was 115.29 lakh tonne as against 99.28 lakh tonne last year. The private players have purchased 4.23 lakh tonnes of wheat so far.

Daily 2 lakh tonnes of wheat is reaching the mandis, according to the Punjab Mandi Board.
