Won’t shut sugar mills: Bangladesh industries minister

Bangladesh Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun told Parliament on Tuesday that the government has not yet taken any decision regarding shutting down the sugar mills owned by the state government. He stated that the government has suspended operations of the six out of 15 state-owned sugar mills.

“No sugar mill has been closed down. No decision has been taken to shut down sugar mills,” he said replying to a tabled question from Awami League MP Ali Azam (Bhola-2).

He said, “Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) run 15 sugar mills in the state. Except for one mill- Carew & Co (Bd) Ltd, all are loss-making units.”

“Government is taking steps to modernize the sugar mills to increase their efficiency and recover from the losses,” Minister further added.
