Zimbabwean exporters dismiss reports of 20,000 tonnes sugar destroyed in Kenya due to poor quality

Sugar exporters from Zimbabwe have rejected the report that around 20,000 tonnes of brown sugar exported to Kenya was destroyed by the Kenyan authorities due to poor quality.

The sugar worth US$ 12 million that was imported by Zimbabwe was destroyed by Kenya, reported some sections of media.

According to the news report published in Chronicle.co.zw, the Zimbabwe Sugar Association and Zimbabwe Sugar Sales (ZSS) have jointly issued a statement that the country exported 61,623 tonnes of brown sugar to Kenya in2018 and only a consignment of 1,000 tonnes of sugar did not meet the Kenyan package printing and labelling requirements.

The statement further stated that “This sugar was consequently rejected by the Kenyan authorities.”

Apart from this Tongaat Hulett, Zimbabwe’s sugar producer stated that the country’s sugar exports have spiked by 29 per cent due to increased demand from Kenya.
