Zimbabwean to introduce sugar levy on beverages

HARARE: Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube announced Thursday the government will introduce a levy on sugary beverages  reported Xinhua.

Minister Ncube proposed the introduction of a levy amounting to 2 U.S. cents per gram of sugar present in beverages, excluding water. The proposed levy is scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2024.

It must be noted that many countries in past tried to implement sugar tax, but it was a failure.
