100-day action plan: Commerce Department seeks inputs from export bodies on trade barriers

New Delhi: The Commerce Department has reached out to export bodies for insights into trade barriers and non-tariff measures encountered in various nations, aiming to integrate strategies to address these hurdles into the forthcoming 100-day action plan for the incoming government following the general elections, reported The Hindu Business Line.

Scheduled within this plan is the unveiling of the ‘Trade Connect e-Platform,’ designed to furnish vital information to new and prospective exporters regarding product identification for export, non-tariff barriers, updated tariff schedules, applicable customs duties, and benefits accorded under India’s Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), disclosed a source familiar with the matter.

“The forthcoming 100-day action plan will encompass diverse measures aimed at amplifying exports, propelling progress towards the $2 trillion target for 2030. The launch of the Trade Connect e-Platform signifies a pivotal step in this direction. Tackling non-tariff barriers is also poised to be integral to the plan, recognizing their role in impeding export expansion in markets where tariff rates are already low,” reported The Hindu Business Line citing sources.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi instructed Ministers during a Cabinet meeting to draft a blueprint for the initial 100 days of the incoming government and another for the subsequent five years.

“Numerous export bodies have already furnished their insights to the Commerce Department regarding non-tariff measures and other trade impediments relevant to their respective sectors across different nations. These insights are presently being collated,” the source further added.
