Nepal: Sugarcane farmers agitation in Kathmandu continues on fifth day

Kathmandu: The agitation of Sugarcane farmers for pending arrears continued on the fifth day as they are yet to get assurance from the government regarding clearance of their dues. The farmers began their protest on Sunday at Mitighar Mandala. On Thursday they demonstrated with ploughs and performed a play depicting farmers’ demand.

The government is calling farmers to discuss the issue but they have denied for same and demanded that their dues be cleared soon by the sugar mills.

Last year too, the farmers had launched an agitation in Kathmandu and called off the protest after the government assured of clearing dues immediately. However, cane growers are yet to get cane dues.
