Hubballi, (Karnataka): The management of Ugar Sugar Mill in Belagavi district on Tuesday agreed to pay Rs 3,300 per tonne of sugarcane taking note of the agitation of the farmers, as directed by the State government, reports The Hindu.
On Monday, Ugar Sugar Works Limited had issued a notice announcing that it would pay Rs. 3,250 per tonne, instead of the government-fixed rate. The decision sparked anger among farmers, who gathered outside the mill in large numbers to demand full payment.
The protest, led by Shashikanth Guruji, saw farmers urging the mill to follow the official order and withdraw its earlier notice. Guruji cautioned the management that continuing to defy the government’s directive would invite serious action.
As the protest gained strength, the mill management agreed to meet the government’s rate of Rs. 3,300 per tonne. The farmers ended their demonstration soon after the announcement.
