Madhya Pradesh: Sugarcane-laden tractor overturns on overbridge, causes 11-hour traffic jam

Indore: A tractor pulling two trolleys loaded with sugarcane overturned on the Nimbola railway overbridge along the Indore–Ichhapur highway on Thursday night, causing a massive traffic jam that lasted nearly 11 hours, reports The Times of India.

Burhanpur SP Devendra Patidar said the accident took place around 8:30 pm near Nimbola, about eight kilometres from Burhanpur, and slowed traffic on both sides of the highway for almost eight kilometres. According to locals, the tractor was headed to a sugar mill in Ziri when its coupling rod snapped on the overbridge, causing the vehicle to tilt and spill sugarcane across the road. The blockage left hundreds of vehicles stranded.

No one was injured, but commuters were stuck through the night. Drivers of buses, trucks and smaller vehicles had to wait for hours, with many spending the night on the roadside or at nearby food stalls. An ambulance carrying a patient was also trapped in the gridlock but managed to move towards Indore after a local resident guided it through a narrow diversion.

Police from the Nimbola station reached the spot soon after the incident and worked with locals to clear the road and restore traffic.

Commuters said that the ongoing four-lane construction and damaged stretches of the road have made the area more prone to such disruptions. Residents also pointed out that similar incidents had happened earlier when tractors carrying sugarcane were attached to two trolleys at once, raising concerns about unsafe transport practices on this busy route.
