Cane-crushing season begins at Chengalrayan co-operative sugar mill

Villupuram (Tamil Nadu): The 2025–26 cane-crushing season began on Wednesday at the public-sector Chengalrayan co-operative sugar mill in Periyasevalai, reports The Hindu.

Sugarcane cultivated on about 10,347 acres by nearly 4,000 farmers has been registered for supply to the mill this season. The mill is expected to crush around 3.01 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.

Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman formally inaugurated the crushing operations.

According to a press release, farmers will be paid ₹4,000 per tonne of cane. In addition, to support members of the society who had registered and supplied cane during the 2024–25 crushing season, a support incentive of ₹349 per tonne was provided. A total of ₹7.95 crore has been directly transferred to the accounts of sugarcane cooperative society members.
