Maharashtra: 184 mills start crushing operations; sugar production reaches 278.39 lakh quintals

Sugarcane crushing for Maharashtra’s 2025–26 season has picked up pace, with operations expanding steadily across the state. As per the latest data from the Sugar Commissionerate, 184 sugar mills started sugarcane crushing as of December 11, 2025.

So far, mills in the state have crushed 336.43 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugarcane, producing 278.39 lakh quintals of sugar. The average sugar recovery rate currently stands at 8.27%.

Of the 184 mills that are actively crushing, 91 belong to the cooperative sector and 93 are privately owned. The Kolhapur division continues to outperform other regions in both sugar output and recovery rates.

Kolhapur: A total of 35 mills are operational, crushing 77.58 LMT of cane and achieving the state’s highest recovery rate of 9.65%. The division has produced 74.88 lakh quintals of sugar.

Pune: The Pune division has 29 operational mills. They have crushed 80.08 LMT of cane with a recovery rate of 8.65%, resulting in 69.28 lakh quintals of sugar.

Solapur: Despite having the largest number of active mills at 41, Solapur has crushed 71.03 LMT of cane, recording a recovery rate of 7.44%.

By this date in the previous season, 190 mills had begun operations, crushing 177.33 LMT of cane with a recovery rate of 7.89%.
