Four sugarcane cutters from Gujarat killed in hit-and-run in Pune district

Pune: Four sugarcane cutters from Gujarat were killed in a hit-and-run accident late on Monday night after their motorcycle was struck by an unidentified vehicle on Veer–Sarala Road in Purandar taluka, around 50 km from Pune, police said, reported The Times of India.

The deceased were identified as Harish Barade (26), Pradip More (26), Amit Chaudhary (27) and Muralidhar Sahala (22), all residents of Dang district in Gujarat. According to the Saswad police, the four men were working at a sugarcane farm owned by Dinesh Nigade in Gunand village of Bhor taluka.

Assistant Inspector of Saswad police station, Vaibhav Sonawane said the men were travelling from Sarola towards Veer around 9 pm when a vehicle coming from the opposite direction hit their motorcycle at a sharp turn. “The impact threw all four off the bike, causing serious injuries. The driver did not stop after the accident,” he said.

Local residents who noticed the injured men lying on the road rushed them to a rural hospital in Saswad, where doctors declared them dead on arrival, police said. The accident occurred close to the sugarcane farm where the victims were employed.

Police said they are trying to determine where the men were headed at night. After post-mortem examinations, the bodies were sent to their native place in Gujarat.

A search has been launched to trace the vehicle involved in the accident. Police said CCTV footage from the area is being examined and appealed to the public to share any information related to the case, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept confidential.
