Punjab: Farmers continue stir over Sheron cooperative sugar mill land

Amritsar: Farmer organisations linked to the Sanyukta Kisan Morcha continued their protest for the second day on Tuesday against the government’s decision to allot land belonging to the Cooperative Sugar Mill in Sheron to various government institutions, The Tribune reported.

The protest is being held inside the mill premises, where farmers have set up arrangements to cope with the cold winter nights. They have also organised facilities to prepare food at the site.

Several farmer leaders addressed the gathering, including Tarsem Singh Lohar, Balbir Singh Jhamka, Mahavir Singh Gill, Puran Singh Marimegha, Jassa Singh Kadgill, Amolak Singh, Resham Singh Pheloke, Manjit Singh Baggu and Master Bhupinder Singh. The speakers said that farmers have a stake in the Cooperative Sugar Mill and would not allow its land to be handed over to the government.

The leaders warned that the agitation would continue until their demands are met. Nachhattar Singh, one of the leaders of the protesting groups, said the silence of the administration and ruling party leaders was a serious concern. He added that if any untoward incident occurs during the winter protest, the government would be responsible.
