Fiji sugar research body steps up efforts to support farmers and industry

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji continues to play an important role in supporting the country’s sugar industry and helping improve the livelihoods of cane farmers, FBC News reported.

Tomasi Tunabuna, Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry of Fiji, recently visited the institute’s facility in Drasa, Lautoka, Fiji, where he praised staff for their work in research, innovation and technical support for the sector.

Founded in 2006, the institute carries out several key activities, including developing improved sugarcane varieties, conducting soil and leaf analysis, testing cane quality, monitoring pests and diseases, promoting crop diversification and producing disease-free seedcane. It also manages projects supported by international donors.

During the visit, Tunabuna toured laboratories, research fields and seedcane production facilities. He interacted with scientists and staff to review ongoing programmes and encouraged them to continue their work in improving productivity and innovation in the sector.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting science-based initiatives to ensure the long-term growth and sustainability of the country’s sugar industry.
