Vaibhavwadi: A tanker carrying ethanol overturned in Karul Ghat on Monday night, leaving the driver injured and creating panic due to a fuel leak, Kokansad reported.
The accident took place around 11 pm when the tanker was travelling from Warana in Kolhapur to Goa. Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle in the ghat section, causing it to overturn by the roadside.
After the accident, the driver got trapped inside the cabin as his leg was stuck under the steering wheel. At the same time, ethanol began leaking from the tanker and spread on the road, raising fears of a fire.
On receiving the alert, teams from Vaibhavwadi police, Gaganbawda police and the fire brigade rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.
Using a crane, JCB and fire brigade equipment, the teams managed to pull the driver out after sustained efforts. He was then shifted to a rural hospital in Vaibhavwadi for treatment.
Meanwhile, the fire brigade controlled the ethanol leak and took safety measures to prevent any mishap. Traffic on the route was regulated by highway police during the operation.
Police officials involved in the rescue operation included Inspector Manoj Sonawalkar along with other personnel.
