Uttar Pradesh: Cane diversion from Baghpat mill to aid timely closure, benefit farmers

Baghpat: Thousands of farmers are set to benefit after the Cane Commissioner approved diversion of four lakh quintals of sugarcane from Baghpat Cooperative Sugar Mill to other mills, easing pressure on excess stock, Jagran reported.

The mill in Baghpat has procured around 30.99 lakh quintals of cane this season, leading to concerns over its timely closure due to surplus availability, even as other mills face shortages.

Following a proposal by District Magistrate Asmita Lal, the diversion plan was cleared to streamline crushing operations and avoid delays.

District Cane Officer Amar Pratap Singh said cane from select purchase centres has been reallocated to mills in Daurala, Mansurpur and Khatauli to balance supply.

Officials said the move will help the Baghpat mill shut operations on time and enable farmers to vacate their fields early for the next sowing season.

They added that timely supply to other mills will also help prevent losses caused by a drop in sugar recovery, which usually declines after mid-April.
