Sugarcane farmers threaten to agitate over pending cane arrears

Vita: Farmers from Vita taluka have threatened to agitate for their pending cane arrears from last three years. Cane growers gathered under the banner of Shetkari Sena organised a morcha at Vita tehsil office and submitted the memorandum of their demands threatening to organise Rasta Roko if the government fails to act on their demand. Farmers have set September 18 deadline to clear cane dues.

Assembly election is round the corner, and politicians will not take the risk to make farmers angry, so they may push the mills in clearing the dues.

Sugarcane farmers claim that their financial condition is worsening day-by-day as they have not received dues from mills. Farmers assert that they are unable to feed their families, nor able to pay school fees of their children.

The Central government had introduced various measures, hike in the MSP of sugar, soft loan scheme, and others to help millers clear mounting sugarcane dues. But, sugar mills failed to clear it, citing surplus sugar and depressed sugar prices.
