Additional cane payment: Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana raises issues of pending cane payment

Kolhapur: The Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS), a farmers’ group in India, has threatened renewed protests after few sugar mills in Kolhapur district refused to comply with an agreement on sugarcane payments, reported Maharashtra Times.

Raju Shetti, the leader of SSS has indicated that if the government does not intervene to ensure the additional payment, protests will resume, and black flags will be shown during the Chief Minister’s visit to Kolhapur on February 16.

In the last two to three years, due to a good sugarcane price, Raju Shetti had initiated a successful agitation. However, the demand for a higher rate than the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) in the current situation has created tensions. The agitation is set to begin unless the government resolves the issue before February 16.
