Bangladesh: Commerce Ministry proposes reduction in sugar import duty

The Commerce Ministry has proposed a reduction in import duties on edible oil, sugar, and dates in anticipation of Ramadan.

The recommendation was conveyed to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) through a letter sent on Monday, after a collaborative meeting involving five ministries at the Commerce Ministry on Sunday.

According to media report within the NBR, the letter outlining the proposed duty reductions has been received, prompting the revenue board to convene a meeting on Thursday to deliberate on the matter. Md Haider Ali, the Ministry’s information and public relations officer informed the media that the letter forwarded to the NBR advocates a decrease in import duties for edible oil, sugar, and dates ahead of Ramadan. The specific reduction in the duty rate, however, will be determined by the NBR.
