Bangladesh: Demand to reopen closed sugar mills

Various labour rights bodies across Bangladesh launched protest rallies on Friday in Dhaka demanding the government to reopen the closed state-owned sugar mills.

These organisations including Trade Union Federation and others organized separate protest rallies in front of the National Press Club for their demand.

Faiezul Hakim, president, Trade Union Federation said that closing of sugar mills is unjustified. Zahirul Islam, president, Sramik Karmachari Federation said, if the government fails to restart these sugar mills, they would intensify their agitation.

All the trade unions urged the government to refrain from disinvestment in the nationalized sugar mills. The government closed down six out of 15 sugar mills in December last year owing to the huge losses.
