Bangladesh: Government reverses sugar price hike move

The government has reversed its decision on the proposed sugar price hike to Tk160, considering the sufferings of the public.

In a press statement released on Thursday night (22 February), the industries ministry said, “The decision has been withdrawn considering public suffering”.

Yesterday, the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Corporation (BSFIC), operating under the industries ministry, had issued a notification indicating a rise in the maximum retail price of sugar produced by state-owned mills to Tk160 per kg, reflecting an increase of Tk20 per kg. The initial notification also clarified that the pricing aligns with the international and domestic market rates.
