Bangladesh: New rail bridge aims to boost sugar logistics

In order to facilitate the smooth railway traffic, the Bangladesh government plans to construct a $1.98 billion railway bridge project. The inauguration of the bridge was done by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday. She virtually led the foundation stone of the 4.8 km-long double-line dual-gauge Bridge from her official residence, Dhaka.

It is mainly an agricultural zone, and most of the country’s sugar and jute mills are located here. The project will help to boost sugar logistics. It will also help to increase connectivity between the Country’s capital and the northwest region.

The bridge will be constructed with the assistance of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency will provide $1.4 billion and the rest will be managed by the government. The government plans to complete the project by 2025.
