Bangladesh: Sugar mill workers, farmers observe strike

The sugarcane growers and the workers associated with the Rangpur Sugar Mill observed a half-day hartal demanding the resumption of six state-owned sugar mills that have been closed for operations from this year.

The agitators also demanded that the sugar mills should clear the cane dues on priority basis to the cane farmers.

The agitators demanded that the government should modernize sugar mills instead of closing their operations.

At about 11:00 am, the demonstrators blocked the railway at Mahimaganj station and halted Burimari-bound Karatoa Express from Shantahar till noon.

M Mustafizur Rahman Dulal, general secretary, the mill employees’ union said, “The local businesses participated in the strike by shutting down their shops and business activities”.
