Bangladesh: Sugarcane farmers and workers agitate for pending arrears

Pabna, Bangladesh: Sugarcane farmers along with the employees and workers attached with the Pabna Sugar Mill staged a demonstration on Wednesday for the pending arrears and wages worth TK11 crore.

The mill has not paid wages of 400 regular workers, 200 seasonal workers and 100 contract workers, said Ashrafuzzaman Ujjal Sardar, general secretary of the Pabna Sugar Mill’ turbine operator and workers’ union.

We have not received salaries for the last six months which amounts to Tk8 crore. The sugarcane farmers’ due is around Tk3 crores, he said.
The mill authorities rushed to the agitators and pacified them and assured them that the mill is trying best to clear their dues.

Saifuddin Ahmed, managing director of Pabna Sugar Mill said that the sugar stock worth of Tk24 crore is piled up in the mill’s godown remain unsold. We have initiated the process to clear the stock. It would not be possible for us to clear the dues unless we sell the available stock.
