Bharatiya Kisan Union stages demonstration outside sugarcane commissioner office

Lucknow: The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) staged a demonstration outside the office of sugarcane commissioner in Lucknow demanding pending cane dues and free electricity to farmers on Wednesday.

Akesh Tikai, BKU leader, said, “Sugarcane arrears of farmers should get clear immediately. The demonstration is to convey our message to the government.”

“Eight states provide free electricity to farmers, and we demand that the government should provide free electricity to farmers in UP,” he further added.

Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government has lodged FIRs against three defaulter mills- Simbholi, Modi and Yadu groups for not paying cane arrears. The sugar mills in the state are yet to pay over Rs 5,500 cane arrears to the farmers. And also the government set October 31 deadline for mills to clear the dues. Failing which, recovery certificates will be issued to them and arrears would be paid after selling sugar from their godowns.
