BJP may face sugarcane farmers’ wrath in by-poll

Bengaluru: The BJP government is likely to face the wrath of sugarcane cultivators in by-polls in Mandya, the sugar bowl of Karnataka.
The BJP is banking on the series of projects launched in the region but has failed to address the sugarcane cultivators’ issues.

Karnataka is already impacted by drought, following which the sugarcane production is affected. Due to the closure of this mill, sugarcane farmers of the district are upset. The non-functioning of Mysugar and Pandavapura Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane (PSSK) made the situation worst for sugarcane farmers in Mandya and adjoining areas.

The four private sugar mills have not been able to take on the extra produce, as they have limited crushing capacities. The farmers demanded the transportation cost to send their cane to mills outside the district. The state government agreed on the issue, but it is alleged that the government has done nothing in the direction.

A total of 15 Assembly constituencies in Karnataka are going to bypolls on December 5. The counting of the votes has been scheduled for December 9.
