Cane growers demand hike in sugarcane price

Yamunanagar, Haryana: The farmers under the banner of Bhartiya Kisan Sangh and the Bhartiya Kisan Union organised sit-in agitation in front of Saraswati Sugar mill demanding the increase in the sugarcane rate.

Rambir Singh Chauhan, state secretary of Bhartiya Kisan Sangh, said, “The government is ignoring the farmers demand of hike the sugarcane rate. As a mark of protest, we staged a demonstration and stopped the sugarcane supply to the mill for two hours. If the government fails to act on our demand, we will hold a mahapanchayat in Radaur town of Yamunanagar district on January 20 to take a future course of action.”

Recently, Haryana sugarcane farmers under the banner of Bhartiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) had threatened to lock down all the sugar mills in the state if the government fails to increase cane purchase price. They have accused the government of being anti-farmer and said in the last five years sugarcane price was increased by only Rs 30 per quintal.
