Coronavirus live updates on 18th April: India’s COVID-19 cases surge to 14,792

Cases of Coronavirus are rising every day, with Maharashtra continues to be worst-hit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the nationwide lockdown–scheduled to end on April 14–will be extended to May 3.

With 957 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours and 36 deaths, India’s total count of coronavirus cases has surged to 14,792, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday. The total cases are inclusive of 2,014 cured and discharged patients, one migrated and 488 deaths. At present, there are 12,289 active COVID-19 cases in the country. Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that mortality rate due to COVID-19 in our country is around 3.3 per cent.

17:06 IST: 20 COVID-19 positive cases from INS Angre depot shifted to hospital
Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik on Saturday said that 20 COVID-19 positive cases were reported from the INS Angre depot and they were shifted to Indian Navy’s hospital. Speaking to ANI, Naik said: “20 COVID-19 positive cases have emerged from INS Angre depot in Colaba where 130 people were kept under quarantine. Patients have been shifted to the Indian Navy’s hospital and are being treated. Others have been quarantined.” Most of these are asymptomatic and have been traced to a single sailor, who was tested positive on April 7.

16:56 IST: Ludhiana ACP Anil Kohli dies of COVID-19
Ludhiana Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anil Kohli passed away due to COVID-19 at SPS Hospital here on Saturday. He was tested positive for the coronavirus on April 13. He was on a ventilator at the hospital. “Our brother officer Anil Kohli, ACP Ludhiana, lost his battle against #COVID-19 today afternoon. Anil served Punjab Police and the people of Punjab for over 30 years. May his soul RIP! Our prayers are with his family, relatives and all those who worked with him,” Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta tweeted.

15:54 IST: Gujarat: 4 new cases of COVID-19 in Rajkot
Four new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Gujarat’s Rajkot, taking the total count of positive cases in the city to 34, as per information provided by the Health Department of Rajkot Municipal Corporation. All the four patients, two men and two women, are residents of Jungleshwar in Rajkot. Earlier on Saturday, Gujarat reported a total of 176 new cases of novel coronavirus cases, taking the total COVID-19 cases in the state to 1,272, as per the state health department.

15:17 IST: 4 fresh COVID-19 cases in Haryana, state count at 227
With four new cases of COVID-19, the total number of cases in Haryana mounted to 227, including 14 Italian nationals, said the state health department on Saturday.
“Out of the 227 positive cases of coronavirus, 137 are active patients, while 88 have recovered/migrated and two deaths have been reported till now,” the department said. With 57 confirmed COVID-19 cases, the maximum number of cases has been reported from Nuh district.

14:54 IST: Two more test COVID-19 positive in Haridwar, Uttarakhand’s tally climbs to 42
Two more people including a woman have tested positive for coronavirus in Haridwar, the district administration said. With these two cases, the total number of cases in the state has mounted to 42. Earlier, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that India’s total number of COVID-19 cases has climbed to 14,378 including 480 deaths and 1,991 cured/discharged.

14:46 IST: 2 more coronavirus cases in Meghalaya, state count reaches 10: CM
Meghalaya reported two more positive COVID-19 cases, taking the state count to 10, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Saturday.
“Two more positive cases detected taking the total to 10 active cases in the state. Both cases are from the house of the first patient one is family and other a helper in the house,” Sangma tweeted. The state on Wednesday reported its first death due to COVID-19.

14:07 IST: Police constable, wife test positive for COVID-19 in Pune
A 42-year-old police constable and his wife have tested positive for COVID-19 in Pune on Friday, an official said on Saturday. The constable along with his wife have been shifted to an isolation ward at a hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad area and are in stable condition, according to Ravindra Shisve, Joint Commissioner of Pune Police. Authorities are involved in tracing the contacts of the duo.

13:09 IST: 1,355 COVID-19 positive cases in Madhya Pradesh
A total of 1,355 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Madhya Pradesh so far, the state health department said on Saturday. 23,070 samples have been collected and reports of 2,708 are yet to come. The state has reported 69 deaths, including 47 in Indore. There are 25 coronavirus-affected districts with the highest number of cases registered in Indore and Bhopal. Indore has 881 coronavirus cases while 208 are from Bhopal.

12:34 IST: Odisha govt asks district Collectors to review status of migrant workers, ensure women’s safety in camps
The Odisha government has asked all district administrations to conduct a review of the situation relating to migrant labourers and stranded persons in the state amid COVID-19 lockdown. It has also asked to ensure the safety of women and girls in the shelter camps on utmost priority. Anu Garg, Principal Secretary, Labour and ESI Department, in her letter to all district collectors wrote, “You are requested to immediately undertake a review of the situation relating to migrant labourers and stranded persons in the state.” Garg also requested them to appoint nodal officers, if not done already for coordinating and monitoring issues relating to migrant workers. “Ensure food and shelter – as most of you have already done. Psychosocial counselling be provided – as is being done in many area. Enumeration has been done by you, but must be updated constantly,” Garg stated.

12:10 IST: 41 new COVID-19 cases in Rajasthan, state tally reaches 1,270
A total of 41 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Rajasthan in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the state now stands at 1,270, according to the state health department. The Rajasthan Health Department has said that 27 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bharatpur, five in Kota, two cases each from Ajmer, Jodhpur and Jaipur, and one case each from Banswara, Nagaur and Jaisalmer. The total number of positive cases in Rajasthan has gone up to 1,270 including 19 deaths, according to the sate health department.

11:57 IST: With 176 new coronavirus cases, Gujarat COVID-19 tally climbs to 1,272
Gujarat reported a total of 176 new cases of novel coronavirus cases in the last 12 hours taking the total COVID-19 cases in the state to 1,272, state health department said on Saturday. Ahmedabad alone reported 143 fresh cases of the virus. The remaining new cases were reported from Surat (13), Vadodara (13), Rajkot(2), Bhavnagar (2) and one each from Anand, Bharuch and Panchmahal. 7 more people COVID-19 linked deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the toll in Gujarat climbed to 48. A total of 88 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals in the state.

11:18 IST: Rajasthan reports 41 new coronavirus cases, state count reaches 1270
With 41 people testing positive for COVID-19 in Rajasthan, the total number of positive cases in the state has risen to 1,270, informed the state Health Department on Saturday.
The Health Department also reported two new deaths in Jaipur, taking the death toll up to 19. Of the two patients who died, one had chronic kidney disease and the other had acute diabetes. Meanwhile, with an increase of 991 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, India’s total count rose to 14,378, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.

10:21 IST: 21 Indian Navy personnel test positive for COVID-19 in Mumbai
Twenty-one Navy personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 at a major naval facility in Mumbai after which tests are being carried out on all the people who came in contact with them in the force. The sudden spike in COVID-19 cases in the Navy has come days after Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh said that caregivers cannot become care seekers and urged his people to remain safe. “The COVID-19 positive patients include 20 sailors of INS Angre, a shore establishment at Mumbai. Most of these are asymptomatic and have been traced to a single sailor who was tested positive on 07 April,” Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said.

09:51 IST: Two students’ hostels in Karnataka to be converted into quarantine centres
Kalaburagi district administration has ordered to temporarily convert students’ hostels of Gulbarga University and Central University of Karnataka Kadaganchi into quarantine centres amid the coronavirus crisis. The order was issued by Sharat B, Deputy Commissioner of Kalaburagi.

09:48 IST: MP: 35 patients discharged from hospitals after recovering from COVID-19
As many as 35 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals here on Saturday.
Out of the total patients, 34 patients were discharged from Indore city while the remaining one from Khargone. Out of 34 patients in Indore, four patients were receiving treatment at MRTB hospital while others were admitted at Aurobindo Hospital. Umja Nagori, one of the patients who was discharged said: “I was admitted in the hospital from the past 17 days. Everyone supported me which is why I am again healthy. I appeal to everyone to stay fit and stay indoors.”

Another corona case in Solapur
The Solapur health department registered another Covid-19 case on Friday, which took the tally of positive cases to 13. On Thursday, Solapur had registered 10 positive cases for coronavirus.
