Demand to reopen Venkateswara sugar mill

Tirupati: BJP demanded that the state government should reopen Venkateswara sugar mill at Gajulamandyam as per the promise made by YSRCP during election manifesto.

The factory was set up in 1974 and stopped operations after it incurred losses. The attempt to auction factory was halted by farmers in 2003-04 through legal intervention.

Akula Satish Kumar, state convenor of cooperative cell, BJP said, “The factory was revived in 2004-05 season by government but was closed down in 2014-15 due to financial losses. Since then farmers are forced to depend on private sugar millers.”

He said, “The promise made by chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy while conducting padyatra during his election rally to revive the mill is yet to be completed.”

“One year has passed since he resumed office but no step has been taken to revive the mills” he further added.
