Ethiopia’s capital hit by sugar shortage

Addis Ababa: The Addis Ababa City Administration Trade Bureau has claimed that there is a severe shortage of sugar in the capital city.

Mesfin Assefa, the deputy head of the bureau said that the city requires 120,000 quintals of sugar but the city is receiving less than the required quantity of sugar during the last four months.

Kumneger Ewnetu, Public Relations and Communications Executive at the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration confirmed that there is a scarcity of sweeteners and stated that this is due to a lack of government-subsidized sugar supply in the city.

The ministry is planning to discuss the issue with the importers to overcome the problem in near future, he said. The ministry had fruitful discussions with sugar factories in Ethiopia, he said.
