Export permission: Pakistan sugar millers threaten government

Lahore: Sugar millers demanded the government to allow them to export around 60% of the surplus sugar stock else they would delay crushing for the upcoming season.

The government should allow us to export sugar as we have surplus stocks, said the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA). The government is not allowing them to export the sweetener fearing a shortage in the domestic market.

The millers are planning to meet Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to discuss the issue and demanded the government to retain 40% of the surplus stock lying with them.

Asim Ghani Usman, PSMA (Central) Chairman said, “If the government wants to retain some buffer stocks to keep sugar prices lower in the local market then the government can retain 500,000 tons out of the 1.2 million tons and can allow us to export remaining sugar.”

If our demand is not met then we would start cane-crushing operations in January 2023, he said.
