Punjab: Farmers demand reopening of Phagwara sugar mill

Phagwara: Farmers in Phagwara district of Punjab, are demanding the reopening of the Phagwara sugar mill, which was sealed by the district administration on September 30 due to the non-payment of dues to sugarcane farmers, reported Tribune India.

A group of farmers met with the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner, Captain Karnail Singh, on Wednesday to submit their demand and to reiterate their call for the immediate payment of their arrears, along with interest.

The Deputy Commissioner assured the farmers that he would forward their demands to the state government.

Earlier, after the non-payment of sugarcane farmers dues of Rs 42-crore, farmer bodies have demanded to seal the sugar mill Phagwara.
