Fiji: New sugar mill will operate whole year and produce ethanol

Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh said that the proposed new sugar mill in Rakiraki will be operating throughout the year and will only produce ethanol, reports Fiji Times.

He was speaking at a function organised in Auckland, New Zealand last Saturday.

Ethanol is used in the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, pharmaceutical products, renewable fuel and medicine.

“We will be setting up a new mill in the Rakiraki that will be producing ethanol crushing 3500 tonnes of cane. We have met several people in India and discussed the issue,” he said.

“Raw sugar and molasses will be produced by Lautoka and Ba mills,” said Singh.

“Rakiraki mill will produce ethanol during the season and once the season is over it will use molasses coming out of Lautoka and Ba mills and continue ethanol production,” he said.
